A Message from Your

President

Not only has spring sprung, but more than one-third of 2008 is now history.   When I was growing up, my grandmother would tell me that the older you got, the faster time went by.  I did not understand that then, but I am here to tell you now that truer words were never spoken!

The Spring TxSSAMT meeting this past weekend was truly a great experience.  I want to thank Jeff Lavender for all the time and effort he put into making this meeting such a success.  There were sessions to meet the interests of each discipline as well as general sessions for all.   We were much honored to have Chris Damon, the AMT executive director, join us, not only as a guest, but as a presenter.  Many thanks, Chris.

As you all know, AMT (and TxSSAMT) is an organization run by the membership.  This meeting was the time that nominations were made for officers for the 2009 -2010 term.  The names, with pictures and brief biographies will be in the summer New Texan.  Please read them and make careful consideration of who you want for your new officers.   You will receive a ballot this summer with the candidates’ names on it.  Please, please, please be an active member of YOUR organization and mark the ballot and return it to the address on the reverse side.  If you would rather, place the ballot in an envelope and then address the envelope to the Chairman of the Board.  The ballots must be returned to the Chairman of the Board by September 1, 2008.

Besides new officers, new committee chairpersons will be appointed at the spring meeting next year.  A brief description of the committees follows:

  • Membership – responsible for sending state certificates and welcoming letters to new members

  • Publications – works with editor on The New Texan

  • Legislative – keeps up with government issues that affect our professions; stays in touch with state government officials

  • Proctor – makes sure proctors are available when needed at schools to oversee pencil and paper exams

  • Placement – helps those seeking jobs connect with facilities needing medical personnel

  • Convention – makes arrangements with hotel and works with local host(ess) in setting up educational meetings

  • Awards – evaluates membership and submits nominations to national for awards given at the National meeting

  • Scholarship and Writing Awards – reviews applications and articles submitted.  Writing awards given in the spring and scholarships given in the fall

If you think you might like to serve on one of these committees, please let a board member know.

This summer, the national educational symposium and business meeting will be in Providence, Rhode Island July 7 - 12.   If you are going, please remember to take “Texas Treasures” to be put in a basket for the Tuesday night social.  Taffy Durfee has volunteered to collect the goodies and assemble the basket when we get there.  If you have not signed up as a delegate, but think you might be able to attend, please let one of the board members know so we can get your name on the delegate list.

Make plans now for the fall State meeting October 3 -4 in Nacogdoches at the Fredonia Hotel-room rate is $83 per night, plus tax.

Hope to see you all in Providence and or Nacogdoches!

Pat
